Présentation de l'éditeur
Based on the authors’ decades-long tenure in clinical environments and their extensive teaching experience, Applied Medical Image Processing: A Basic Course introduces the basic methods in applied image processing without assuming that readers have extensive prior knowledge beyond basic applied mathematics, physics, and programming. Illustrated with simple, well-commented MATLAB® examples, the book’s tangible and accessible presentation demonstrates real-life applications.
The rapid evolution of radiological imaging in the past four decades has brought medical image processing into the forefront as an essential tool for clinical research, a crucial component of modern diagnostics, and an indispensable element the actual treatment of diseases. A hands-on introduction to the basic image processing algorithms used in clinical routine applications, Applied Medical Image Processing: A Basic Course closes the gap between basic engineering knowledge such as simple programming and applied mathematics on the one hand, and the general understanding of a science that affects the health of a broad public.

This is a good introduction to medical imaging. It is intended for those who would like to understand something about the inner workings of medical image processing algorithms. There are a number of exercises at the ends of the chapters which help to illustrate the material covered. These exercises can be undertaken using MATLAB software, or the program OCTAVE (which is a free "clone" of MATLAB). The book will be most useful to those who have a good grounding in undergraduate physics and math. With the requisite background, you can concentrate on learning the image processing and its medical aspects. For example, if you have never encountered Fourier Transforms before, the development in this book may be a bit sketchy for you.

This excellent textbook is a real treasure chest for any student without prior knowledge but interest in medical image processing. Starting with a recap of the basic aspects of medical image acquisition, it smoothly introduces into the field of medical image processing in a very plain way. The chapter on "Filtering and Transformations" deserves special attention as it contains one of the most straight forward explanations of the Fourier transform I stumbled upon so far. In this and all the other chapters, the authors cover the underlying theory only to the amount which is absolutely necessary to understand the "Why?", and put much emphasize on the "How?". Here, Matlab(R)'s freely available GPL counterpart Octave provide the vehicle for immediately getting started with one's own hands-on experience. The authors explain each algorithm's individual steps in detail. Some may complain that the source code which comes with the book does not make use of the beauty of Matlab's matrix calculation capabilities. Having said that, the way the examples are coded allows for a pain-free transcription into any other language, and is easily understandable to anyone with just a basic idea on programming.
This book covers a wide range of aspects of medical image computing; however, it does not elaborate on details of the more sophisticated methodologies, but contains some suggestions for further reading. Finally, an outlook onto recent trends in medical image computing (fMRI, DTI, etc.) would have been a befitting conclusion of this remarkable book.
