Présentation de l'éditeur
NOTE: This is a single chapter excerpted from the book The Laboratory Rabbit, Guinea Pig, Hamster, and Other Rodents, made available for individual purchase. Additional chapters, as well as the entire book, may be purchased separately.
This chapter describes the taxonomy and origin of hamsters. Hamsters are classified within Rodentia, the largest mammalian order. Rodents are classically divided into three suborders: Sciuromorpha, Myomorpha, and Hystricomorpha. Muroidea, a superfamily within the suborder Myomorpha, includes the closely related families Muridae and Cricetidae, murine rodents and hamsters, respectively. The natural habitat of Syrian hamsters is a small area in northwest Syria in the vicinity of Aleppo where they originated. Syrian hamsters construct deep, chambered burrows in which they store grain and other feedstuffs foraged from the fields. Their natural habitat is dry, rocky steppes, or brush slopes. Hamsters are primarily granivorous, but also eat green plant parts and shoots, roots, insects, and fruits. They not only have a very narrow genetic base, but they have been domesticated for a relatively short time in comparison with mice, rats, and guinea pigs. Information regarding inbred strains, genetically defined stocks, and mutants for coat color and other coat characteristics has been provided and variants include white, cream, piebald, albino, hairless, and longhair.
