NOTE: This is a single chapter excerpted from the book The Laboratory Rabbit, Guinea Pig, Hamster, and Other Rodents, made available for individual purchase. Additional chapters, as well as the entire book, may be purchased separately.
Hamsters are generally hardy animals when housed under optimal conditions. However, even animals free of infectious pathogens develop disease associated with conditions such as advancing age, heredity, and environment. This chapter summarizes such conditions as recorded under the heading, diseases associated with aging such as amyloidosis, glomerulonephropathy, atrialthrombosis, and polycystic disease. Amyloidosis is the noninfectious disease of primary importance in the aging Syrian hamster. The incidence of amyloidosis varies by hamster colony and there is a higher incidence of amyloidosis in females compared to males. It results from the extracellular deposition of highly ordered proteinaceous material in tissues. This chapter also discusses the nutritional disorders, genetic, traumatic, and other noninfectious diseases in hamsters. Spontaneous neoplasms are uncommon in the Syrian hamster, especially when compared to mice and rats.
