Présentation de l'éditeur
NOTE: This is a single chapter excerpted from the book The Laboratory Rabbit, Guinea Pig, Hamster, and Other Rodents, made available for individual purchase. Additional chapters, as well as the entire book, may be purchased separately.
This chapter describes the taxonomy and genetics of different other hamsters, which have been used as important animals for biomedical research such as the Phodopus sungorus (Djungarian hamster), mesocricetus brandti (Turkish hamster), cricetulus migratorius (Armenian hamster), and the mesocricetus newtoni (Romanian hamster). Research programs that use these hamsters generally maintain their own breeding colonies, acquire these animals from other research laboratories with breeding colonies, or trap hamsters from their native habitat to establish intramural colonies. As interest in use of these hamsters in research increased, the sharing of hamsters between laboratories and use of common names to describe the species has caused confusion as to which species of hamster was actually used in the published research. Furthermore, the chapter studies the management, behaviors, and research utilities of each of the other hamsters. The most studied species, Phodopus sungorus, is called by many common names, including the hairy-footed hamster, Siberian hamster, and the Djungarian hamster.
