NOTE: This is a single chapter excerpted from the book The Laboratory Rabbit, Guinea Pig, Hamster, and Other Rodents, made available for individual purchase. Additional chapters, as well as the entire book, may be purchased separately.
This chapter studies chinchillas as a recent and specialized addition to the biomedical research. It describes the taxonomy, evolutionary history, and domestication of chinchillas. Chinchillidae are the members of the Order Rodentia and are hystricomorphous rodents. The hystricomorphous condition is characterized by a portion of the masseter muscle passing through greatly enlarged infraorbital foramina. The Chinchillidae developed in and are currently limited to the western reaches of South America. Genetic information commonly associated with research rodents does not exist for chinchillas. Chinchillas appear to have become established as an important model in acoustic research based on the rapid increase in frequency and numbers of published papers involving their use. Research related to the auditory system remains as the primary field using chinchillas as experimental models.
