Graphiurus kelleni or the African dormouse is a relatively small rodents, with an average body length ranging from 7–10 cm, and with body weight ranging between 18 and 23 g. Members of this species are generally mouselike in appearance, but resemble squirrels or chipmunks, as they possess furred tails. Their bodies are covered with thick, soft, golden brown fur. Dormice are mainly arboreal animals, agile, and well adapted to climbing, as they possess well-developed footpads. G. kelleni are nocturnal and have an excellent sense of hearing, and can signal each other with a range of vocalizations. They are omnivorous, typically feeding on fruits, berries, flowers, nuts, and insects. G. kelleni and other dormice are unique among rodents in that they lack a cecum. The dormouse is highly susceptible to lethal infections with MPXV and a valuable animal model for the evaluation of prophylactics and therapeutics against MPXV infections. G. kelleni have characteristics that make them most practical for modeling the disease since they can be housed in conventional rodent caging, they reproduce well under laboratory conditions, and they can be maintained free of common laboratory murine pathogens.
