A great book to introduce the neuroscience of play. The focus on rodents and rough and tumble play gives serious students of play important methodological and theoretical insights usually missing in studies of human play. The authors clearly explain the importance and evolutionary insights that come from comparing the play of closely related species. This is an important comparative investigation that sheds light on the emergence of play in evolution as a biological, developmental and social phenomenon.

There are two important things you need to know about this book.
Firstly its about 95 percent about rats.
And secondly there isn't much neuroscience. Its mostly just reflections gained from a lifetime of studying/watching rats.
Overall there are few strong conclusions. More along the lines of play means different things to different species at different life stages. And since we've only researched a few species so far we don't have much to say about play in animals generally.
By the way, the book consists of 170 pages text, 36 pages endnotes and 41 pages bibliography (including over 4 pages of the authors own works)
