A few of my friends were looking for herbal help for their dental issues and that is when I chanced upon a manuscript of this book. It was impressive. Now, I hold a copy of the freshly released paperback and on going through the book, I am determined to suggest it to anyone who wants to improve their dental / oral wellness using herbs. Here is why....

It is a clearly written book about using easily available herbal preparations for dealing with various issues related to teeth, gum and the rest of the mouth. The authors, Leslie, an herbalist and Linda, a dental hygienist, begin this book with chapters on oral anatomy, strategy for daily care, and a symptoms check list. Using a completed checklist, one can refer to chapter 12 and read the relevant parts of the herbal materia medica.

The second part of the book is very academic and deals with dental diseases and issues from pregnancy to old age when loss of teeth compels people to get dentures. The authors have assumed an approach that informs and educates a lay-person very well without overwhelming them with too much of scientific and medical information. A long list of various systemic diseases and how they affect oral / dental health is dealt with in chapter 10, for example, how diabetes manifests in the mouth.

Now comes part three of this book which enables the readers to take practical steps for helping with their oral / dental issues using herbs that are described in the materia medica. Just enough information is provided so that one can get familiar with the herbs and understand how and when to use them.

No self-help book is complete without educating the readers about how to avoid the problems in the first place. Prevention is better than cure, after all. For this purpose, the authors have very wisely included a section on food, drinks, snacks, dental interventions, environmental and other current issues that interfere with the well-being of the teeth / mouth. Simple facts are presented well, for example, avoiding sugars, sugary drinks, highly acidic beverages and improving overall nutrition results in better dental health. Common sense, right? But we do not get this information / advice during routine dental visits.

The chapter on mouth as a microcosm of the body is quite fascinating as we get to learn about the connection between dental and systemic diseases. Though periodontal disease appears to be a local affliction, the bacteria involved with this disease are capable of traveling to brain, heart, surgical implants, lungs and other parts of the body, and giving rise to various inflammatory processes. Apparently, an ounce of prevention / intervention using herbal approach can protect us from having our bodies ravaged with the effects of dental diseases.

The book ends with a rich section on dentistry and herbal resources and list of herbal suppliers. The authors provide various formulations for herbal toothpastes, powders, brushes, rinses, poultices, teas, tinctures and such that we could easily prepare at home for helping ourselves and our families. At the end of each chapter, there is a long list of references ... in case a reader wants to do further research.

In all, this is a lovingly written and highly enjoyable book even though it deals with diseases, pathology and herbal interventions. The authors have covered a vast ground and their simple and down-to-earth style makes "Dental herbalism" into a must-have book. I strongly recommend this book.
